The only serviceman that seem to get a significant degree of media attention are victims like Jessica Lynch, villains such as the guards at Abu Gahrib prison, and cowards like the Alabama National Guardsmen who refused a dangerous mission last October.
I served on active duty with Sgt. Uvanni for about a year. He was in different platoon and a higher rank than me so I didn't know him well but his dedication is a source of great pride for all that served with him. He exemplified the Marine Corps core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
After our unit got off of active duty, Sgt. Uvanni's contract with the Marine Corps was up and he got out having more than fulfilled his commitment. When the unit was again activated in early 2003 Sgt. Uvanni tried to get back in the Corps to deploy to Iraq with us but was unable to because of bureaucratic red tape. He then joined the National Guard and deployed to Iraq with a Guard unit.
Sadly, Sgt. Uvanni's life was cut short when he was mortally wounded by a sniper's bullet in Samarra, Iraq on October 1, 2004.
By all accounts Corporal Tremblay served with honor and distinction during his tour.
More than 40 Fox Company Marines attended his funeral; a tribute to what an outstanding Marine Corporal Tremblay was and the impression he made on the unit during his brief stay.
The Marines of Fox Company are sad lose one of our own and proud to have served with an excellent Marine.
