Media Silent on Marine Corps Success
For months, news outlets, politicians, and anti-war jackals, many of them giddy with joy, trumpeted shortfalls in military recruiting. In stark contrast, the Marine Corps’ recent announcement that it was actually going to exceed its recruiting goal for Fiscal Year 2005 went completely unreported.
I learned of this achievement by reading a Marines.com. An online search turned up absolutely no coverage of this astounding accomplishment by the branch of the military doing much of the fighting and dying in the War on Terror.
On September 12th several major news outlets ran full length stories on the Army’s recruiting problems. However, two days later the Marine Corps released the details of its success and the entire media failed to report on it. If the Army’s recruiting shortfall is news is not the Marine Corps recruiting success also news?
The over-coverage of negative stories regarding our military and the glaring under coverage of positive military events suggests a deep bias against the military by the press. This anti-military animus is ironic considering that the freedom of the press is safeguarded by that same military.
